Zachariah’s Perfect Day

The story begins with 12-year old Zachariah waking up and being excited to be old enough to join Muslims around the world in fasting from sunrise to sunset.

His family gathers for the Sehri (a pre-dawn meal before fasting) and enjoys the many foods his mother has prepared, including parathas (flatbread) – his favorite.

As the family eats, they discuss the importance of fasting and share what they like best about the holiday.

Zachariah's Perfect Day

Zachariah’s perfect day continues at school, where he is proud to share his holiday with his friends and teachers. When he arrives back home, he helps his mom cook the iftar (the meal eaten after sunset to break the fast) that includes kebabs, rice, chaat masala, soup, samosas, and more parathas.

Zachariah is honored to be chosen to call the adhan (the call to prayer) before sitting down to the feast. Zachariah’s perfect day ends with him enjoying time with his family and reflecting on the true meaning of Ramadan.

We recommend this book for people of all faiths. Understanding and appreciating cultural and religious celebrations is important, and books are a great way to bring that conversation into your home or classroom. It is a wonderful addition to your #DiverseKidLit library. Order the book.
